Putting a Twist on our New Year’s Resolutions

Generally, I don’t bother with making resolutions because I don’t believe they’re lasting. We’ve all heard at least one person at the New Year’s Eve party declare, “I’m going to lose 50 pounds!” Or maybe, “This is the year I will quit smoking!” And possibly, “I’m going to spend more time with my family.”
I just read a 2018 article that said 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February. Really! That’s less than two months! But today’s blog is not about why that failure happens, so let’s move on.
Besides, like some of you, I stopped making resolutions a long time ago in favor of making general lifestyle changes that are more likely to stick.
About that Twist…
First, ask yourself these 2 questions related to your faith (I did, and it was worth the time.):
- Am I harboring any attitudes that might hinder my spiritual growth in this new season?
- What’s my biggest fear? And has that fear become my permanent lens for living?
Take your thoughts captive and write down the answers. I long to live by faith and operate under the Spirit of power, love, and a sound mind—not fear. And I want my faith in Christ to override every fear-driven area of my heart.
The conclusion? Let’s tackle our mind-sets, our core beliefs. Let’s get rid of all hinderances, and let God have His perfect way.
Let’s climb aboard the New Year Thing.
“Forget about what’s happened;
don’t keep going over old history.
Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new.
It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it?
There it is! I’m making a road through the desert,
rivers in the badlands.
Isaiah 43:19 (The Message)
My 2020 resolutions:
- To take God at His Word. 100%
- To lay aside my doubts about God’s plan to prosper me. Jeremiah 29:11
- To leave behind any fear that I’m going to “miss it” (the new thing God is doing)
- To do on Earth what I will never be able to do in Heaven: give sacrifices of praise (when I don’t feel like praising); and worship amid trials and tears (when I’d rather throw a pity party)
- To give Holy Spirit rulership over my five senses, (rather than caving into what I see and hear…)
And now you can set a fire to that list of hindering thoughts you took captive little earlier. They’re not coming with you into 2020.
Friend, our Father’s desire is to prosper every believer, and He is decidedly bigger than our fear. But do we BELIEVE this? Is it possibly our partnership with unbelief and doubt that help kill our resolutions?
Then this is where we are going to put a twist on our 2020. Who’s in?

A preferred lifestyle: “The life that pleases Me is a life lived in the gratitude of grace, always choosing to walk with Me in what is right. this is the sacrifice I desire from you. If you do this, more of My salvation will unfold for you.”
